Job Title: Science and Laboratory Specialist
Job Summary:

The Science and Laboratory Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the delivery of the Science curriculum across the Secondary School. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled and experienced professional to join our team and make a positive impact on student learning.

This role involves providing high-quality laboratory and classroom support, developing and maintaining maintenance schedules for laboratory equipment, conducting repairs and arranging servicing, ensuring safe and tested equipment, maintaining orderly labs and classrooms, assisting with equipment acquisition, and managing end-of-term tasks.

The successful candidate will have a Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or higher, demonstrated experience in a laboratory or technical environment, a strong understanding of WHS legislation and regulations relevant to a school laboratory setting, knowledge of chemical and biological safety practices, and ethical handling of animals in Science.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess strong organisational and communication skills with attention to detail, be service-oriented and flexible, willing to assist in other school areas and events outside of core responsibilities, able to conduct Risk Assessments, contribute to safety policy development and review, and experience in liaising with external suppliers and service providers for laboratory needs.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide high-quality laboratory and classroom support to the science team, including assisting with practical lessons and experiments, observing student experiments, leading demonstrations, conducting safety inductions, providing safety demonstrations, monitoring student safety, and supporting teaching activities.
  • Develop and maintain maintenance schedules for laboratory equipment, conduct repairs and arrange servicing, ensure safe and tested equipment, maintain orderly labs and classrooms, assist with equipment acquisition, and manage end-of-term tasks.
  • Manage chemical and hazardous materials in accordance with regulatory requirements, maintain chemical registers, ensure proper chemical labelling and storage, advise staff on chemical use and disposal, prepare and dispose of chemicals, maintain spill kits, and review chemical storage practices.

Selection Criteria:
  • Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques or higher (preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience in a laboratory or technical environment.
  • Strong understanding of WHS legislation and regulations relevant to a school laboratory setting.
  • Knowledge of chemical and biological safety practices, and ethical handling of animals in Science.
  • Service-oriented and flexible approach with ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organisational and communication skills with attention to detail.
  • Willingness to assist in other school areas and events outside of core responsibilities.
