Job Title

Senior Legal Counsel

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled lawyer with experience in energy retail regulation and commercial contracting. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the Australian energy market and be able to assess complex legal issues.

The role involves providing expert advice on retail regulatory requirements, drafting and negotiating contracts, and collaborating cross-functionally with commercial, operations, and compliance teams.

This is an exciting opportunity for a mid-senior level legal professional to join our team and contribute to the success of our organization.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Advise on energy retail regulatory requirements, including NERL, NERR, AER obligations, and Victorian-specific energy laws.
  2. Draft, review, and negotiate retail energy contracts, customer agreements, and supply arrangements.
  3. Provide strategic advice to senior management on regulatory changes and compliance strategies.
  4. Liaise with regulators, respond to compliance inquiries, and manage reporting obligations.
  5. Support resolution of customer, contractual, and regulatory disputes.
  6. Collaborate cross-functionally with commercial, operations, and compliance teams.
Requirements
  • A minimum of 7 years of experience with a strong background in energy retail regulation and commercial contracting.
  • Strong understanding of the Australian energy market, particularly retail operations and compliance frameworks.
  • Ability to assess complex legal issues and provide clear, commercially viable solutions.
  • Prior in-house legal role in an energy retail organisation.
