We are a leading national synchrotron science facility in the UK, accelerating electrons to near light-speed to generate brilliant beams of light for research and development across various scientific disciplines.
Our current major upgrade, Diamond-II, will combine a new machine and beamlines with comprehensive upgrades to optics, detectors, and computing, generating an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.
About the Role
We are seeking a (Senior) Magnet Engineer/Physicist to design, procure, and test high-quality accelerator magnets for the Diamond-II project.
The key duties include:
- Designing 2D and 3D magnetic structures for high-quality accelerator magnets using sophisticated software.
- Creating detailed procurement specifications for magnets.
- Supervising procurement contracts for magnet supply.
- Setting up, operating, and maintaining high-precision magnetic measurement systems.
- Undertaking magnetic measurement of accelerator magnets and analyzing data to assess field quality.
- Staying up-to-date with worldwide developments in magnet technology.
The major focus of this role is pulsed magnets, including kickers and septa.
Applicants will be considered at either Grade 4 or 5 level, depending on their skills, experience, and qualifications.
About You
If you have experience in magnet design, construction, and testing, preferably of accelerator magnets, we want to hear from you.
You should have experience in design, production, and testing of high-quality accelerator magnets, as well as supervision of procurement contracts.
You will also need experience in magnetic measurement systems and data analysis, as well as a good basic knowledge of electromagnetism.
You should hold a Degree in Engineering or Physics, or demonstrate significant equivalent experience, with PhD qualified candidates desirable, particularly at the senior level.
You will demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with staff at all levels.
