About the Role

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to join our Particle Physics Department as a Neutrino Mechanical Engineer Industrial Placement. This exciting opportunity will provide the successful candidate with hands-on experience in the design, construction, and operation of cutting-edge scientific instruments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Simulate the magnetic horn, a key focusing device for the neutrino beam, using standard particle physics frameworks and finite element analysis.
  • Work closely with our physicists and engineers to gain hands-on experience at the forefront of technology.
  • Contribute to the development of complex particle accelerators, targets, and magnets, and participate in the calibration and understanding of these systems.
About the Department

The STFC Particle Physics Department is a leading international research group, involved in the largest current and future neutrino experiments. Our team is responsible for designing, constructing, and operating some of the most sensitive scientific instruments in the world, collaborating with partners in academia, industry, and international laboratories.

Requirements
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement.
  • Required or have requested to take an industrial placement year.
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement.
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2025.
  • Interest in particle physics and simulation.
  • Programming experience and familiarity with finite element analysis methods.
