North Melbourne, Victoria, Australia VISY Full time
About Visy

At Visy, we're dedicated to powering the circular economy by closing the loop between packaging, remanufacturing, and recycling. As Australia's leading recycled and kraft paper manufacturer, our integrated recycling and manufacturing operations allow us to collect paper and cardboard from households and businesses, turning it into up to 100% recycled paper. Our CoGeneration Plant in Melbourne reduces our carbon footprint by diverting materials from landfill and generating process steam and electricity for our 100% recycled paper manufacturing plants on site.

Role Overview

The Environmental & Safety Officer will play a critical role in ensuring the cogeneration plant's operations meet regulatory, safety, and environmental standards. This position requires an in-depth understanding of environmental regulations, workplace safety, and operational health requirements specific to cogeneration plants. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with plant managers, operational staff, and external agencies to develop, implement, and maintain safety and environmental compliance programs.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Compliance Management: Ensure the plant's adherence to government environmental, health, and safety regulations. Prepare and submit necessary reports to regulatory bodies.
  • Safety Protocols and Procedures: Develop, implement, and oversee health and safety protocols to minimize accidents, injuries, and hazardous incidents. Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Monitor emissions, water usage, and waste management processes to ensure compliance with environmental standards. Recommend improvements to reduce environmental impact.
  • Training and Awareness: Lead safety training programs for employees, including emergency response, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and safe handling of materials.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate any environmental or safety incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions. Maintain detailed records of incidents and responses.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular audits and assessments of equipment, facilities, and operational processes to identify and mitigate environmental and safety risks.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify and propose strategies for improving the plant's safety and environmental performance, staying updated on best practices in cogeneration and energy production.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in an environmental or safety role, ideally within the energy sector or a cogeneration plant.
  • Certification in Occupational Health and Safety (e.g., OSHA, NEBOSH) and/or Environmental Compliance (e.g., ISO 14001) is preferred.
Estimated Salary Range

$90,000 - $120,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
