
Aboriginal Community Liaison Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our team as a Census Engagement Manager for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This role offers an opportunity to make a real impact by fostering positive relationships with key community stakeholders, building trust, and ensuring Census engagement is culturally safe, inclusive, and meaningful.
- This role requires strong cultural capability, leadership skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining cultural safety and responsiveness.
- You will be responsible for planning, managing, and undertaking engagement activities to raise awareness of the Census and encourage participation among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
- Assist in recruiting and training a team of field and engagement staff emphasizing cultural competence and sensitivity.
- Conduct field work with safety and care and ensure the safety and well-being of your team.
- Leverage your strong community connections to promote Census job opportunities, support local recruitment, and ensure Census messaging is delivered in culturally appropriate ways.
- Provide assistance in gathering support for the Census from community organisations and service providers.
- Provide in-field assistance when required for Census assisted completion activities.
- Supervise and assist a team of field and engagement staff for procedural queries as required.
- Be responsible for the storage of materials relating to the promotion of the Census and where required, store materials for a team of field and engagement staff working in your area.
- Assist in the implementation of Census activities designed to reduce barriers for the public and increase participation in the Census, for example, Fill-in-Form and information sharing.
About the Role: The successful candidate will have experience working with and/or engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities, and knowledge of issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
About the Census: The Census is run every five years and is one of the largest and most important collections to count the number of people and houses in Australia. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.
