Job Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join our team in the field of information visualization and bioinformatics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on a challenging project that involves the development of novel visualisation techniques for the Gene Ontology (GO) and its integration with the Systems Biology Graphical Notation (SBGN).

Project Overview

The GO is one of the most widely used biomedical ontologies, describing different aspects of genes and gene products under three broad categories: biological process, cellular components, and molecular functions. However, current solutions for network layout are not particularly tailored towards this application. Our project aims to investigate how domain knowledge captured in ontologies can assist in creating high-quality layouts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel visualisation techniques for GO-LEGO and its integration with SBGN
  • Investigate how domain knowledge captured in ontologies can assist in creating high-quality layouts
  • Collaborate with researchers from the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University

Requirements

To be eligible for this position, applicants must have an excellent academic track record in computer science, bioinformatics, or a related discipline. Applicants should possess very good programming and analytical skills, be able to work independently as well as cooperatively with others, and have research experiences in ontologies, knowledge representation, bioinformatics, or information visualisation.

Benefits

This scholarship is tenable for three years, and extendable for up four years, dependent on satisfactory progress and availability of funding. The successful student will have access to state-of-the-art facilities and expertise within the Faculty of Information Technology at Monash University.
