Job Description

The role of a Senior Trading Underwriter involves creating and executing an effective strategy for the product(s). This includes contributing towards selecting the risk appetite and informing the pricing of the product(s). The individual will be accountable for the financial performance of the product(s) and/or distribution(s).

Key responsibilities include working with the Underwriting Head and Senior Trading Underwriter (London) to develop the underwriting strategy, executing that strategy, and having accountability for meeting or exceeding short and medium-term financial plans. Additionally, the individual will build and maintain knowledge of the market, ensuring they have extensive knowledge of legal, economic, competitive, and socio-demographic factors.

They will work closely with broker partners at a senior management level to build and develop the portfolio, meeting or exceeding financial plans. The role also involves underwriting a range of risks in accordance with stated underwriting appetite, providing input and feedback to refine underwriting appetite, and acting as a point of technical referral.

  • Provide feedback to Product Managers & Heads of Class and members of our Pricing team relating to the effectiveness of risk pricing models to drive enhanced sophistication and accuracy.
  • Understand the risk environment and contribute to the identification and management of key risks threatening the success and sustainability of the business.
  • Contribute to 'first line of defense' activities using audit and peer review tools, complemented by exception reporting and performance MI.

Extensive Technical Knowledge: Extensive technical knowledge of the product(s), including features, factors driving product performance, market dynamics influencing product delivery, and customer requirements.

  • Demonstrate gravitas and clarity of purpose, giving confidence to senior stakeholders.
  • Have a detailed understanding of sophisticated pricing practices and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the legal, regulatory, and compliance provisions applying to the UK motor insurance market.
  • A clear understanding of principles relating to risk management, identifying, monitoring, and managing risks.
