Mater Pathology is seeking a highly skilled Genetic Pathology Expert to join our team and contribute to delivering exceptional care to patients across our network of public and private hospitals and community referrers.

The successful candidate will be part of our Genetic Services Strategy, which involves expanding our range of genetic testing in cancer, neurosciences, and perinatal/obstetric medicine. We are the largest private and public single-campus birthing and neonatology service in Australia.

This role is supported by experienced clinical scientists and pathologists from other disciplines with partial scope of practice for supervision of tests.

About the Role

As a Genetic Pathology Expert, you will be responsible for ensuring that molecular genetic pathology testing at Mater Pathology meets the highest standards and complies with relevant guidelines and standards. This includes:

  • Providing clinically appropriate advice and information to clinicians.
  • Ensuring staff are qualified and trained to perform testing.
  • Using appropriate equipment and methods for testing.
  • Providing accurate and unambiguous results and interpretations, and reporting important findings to clinicians in a timely manner.
  • Participating in external quality assurance programs and ensuring satisfactory performance.
Key Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Managing processes and staff in a clinical environment.
  • Teaching and training staff and students.
  • Interpreting test results using your specialized knowledge of human genetics.
  • Working effectively as a member of a team and communicating with colleagues, patients, and clients.
  • Participating in clinical on-call and results validation workload.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular genetic testing and diagnosis, including single nucleotide variant detection methods, microarray testing, Sanger sequencing, MLPA, and massively parallel sequencing.
  • Experience with microarrays and exome sequencing.
  • A high level of interpersonal communication skills and ability to work effectively in a complex laboratory environment.
  • Specialized knowledge and understanding of human genetics and its relevance to medical practice.
