Genetic Pathology Specialist

About the Role
Mater Pathology is seeking a full or part-time Genetic Pathologist to contribute to delivering exceptional care across its network of public and private hospitals and community referrers.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in Mater Pathology's genetic services strategy, expanding its suite of genetic testing in cancer, neurosciences, and perinatal/obstetric medicine.
As part of this esteemed team, you will collaborate with experienced clinical scientists and pathologists in other disciplines to ensure the highest standard of molecular genetic pathology testing, adhering to all relevant guidelines and standards.
This includes ensuring:
- clinically appropriate advice and information is readily available to clinicians;
- staff are appropriately qualified and trained to perform testing;
- equipment and methods are suitable and relevant for testing;
- results and interpretations provided are accurate and unambiguous, with important findings reported to clinicians in a timely manner;
- the laboratory participates in adequate external quality assurance programs, achieving satisfactory performance.
You will have:
demonstrated expertise in a broad range of current Molecular Genetic testing and diagnosis, including single nucleotide variant detection methods, microarray testing, Sanger sequencing, MLPA, and massively parallel sequencing (with experience in exome or genome-level MPS preferred but not essential);
experience with microarrays and exome sequencing;
a proven ability to manage processes and staff in a clinical environment;
teaching and training skills to share knowledge with colleagues and students;
excellent interpersonal communication skills;
a high level of initiative when working in complex laboratory environments;
ability to work effectively as part of a team; and
specialized knowledge and understanding of human genetics relevance to medical practice, particularly for clinical interpretation of individual patient test results.
The successful candidate must also be able to use clinical judgment and knowledge to deal with unexpected, atypical, and complex work scenarios.
Additionally, they will participate in on-call and results validation duties, both during and outside regular hours. Qualifications include MBBS or equivalent, FRCPA (Genetic Pathology) registration, and AHPRA registration (no restrictions).
