We are seeking an experienced legal professional to fill the Principal Legal Adviser position.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the delivery of strategic advice on treaty related matters and whole-of-government treaty reform.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with our team, who are responsible for groundbreaking work in cultural rights, self-determination, treaty, and truth.

As the Principal Legal Adviser, you will work closely with our Special Counsel - Treaty to coordinate and lead a team of legal advisers.

Your primary responsibilities will include:

  • ">
">Providing culturally appropriate legal advice and reports on sensitive issues;">Leading treaty negotiations with First Peoples' Representative groups on behalf of the state;">Embedding a whole-of-government, coordinated approach for statewide treaty and traditional owner treaties with Aboriginal Victorians;">

">Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills;">Strong legal, analytical, conceptual and problem-solving skills;">Excellent written and verbal communication skills;">Proven ability to lead a team to initiate, deliver and manage strategic projects on time and to a high standard;">Demonstrated willingness to be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities with the ability to meet deadlines while working in pressured situations;">

Understanding government processes and systemic state intersections with marginalized or vulnerable groups is essential.

Additionally, having an understanding, experience and commitment to the rights of First Peoples in Victoria, including cultural rights, self-determination, treaty and truth is expected in this role.

A strong connection to community and lived experience of impacts of colonialism would be beneficial in this role.
