Intensive Care Transition Year Professional

About the Position

This intensive care transition year position is designed to enable completion of training and admission to the college of intensive care medicine for trainees registering after 2014.

The primary goal is to introduce consultant-level activities into the trainee's experience in a structured manner through supervised practice, progressing to minimal supervision as required.

The structured introduction will focus on:

  • Supervised ward rounds
  • Remote on-call management
  • Development of a non-clinical portfolio
Department Overview

The intensive care unit environment features a 26-bed unit operating as two pods, staffed by multidisciplinary teams including intensivists, senior and junior registrars, residents, physiotherapists, nursing staff, and pharmacists.

The unit has dedicated outreach consultants available Monday to Friday during working hours, with weekends covered by two consultants, alternating daily support for each pod. Our senior medical staffing consists of 8.5 consultant EFT, split between four full-time consultants and nine part-time staff members. We cover 40 weekends annually with intenstivists.

Subspecialty programs include:

  • Ultrasound and echocardiography training
  • Provision of lung ultrasound and echocardiography within the unit
  • Combined training program with technicians
  • USS course certification for ICU trainees
  • Research initiatives
  • ECMO expertise
  • CICM preparation courses - Part 1 and 2
  • Organ donation protocols
  • Infection prevention strategies
  • Specialty liaison portfolios for cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, infectious diseases, anesthesia, and emergency medicine
Patient Exposure

Average exposure to over 2000 admissions annually.

Over 4500 external emergency responses per year.

Adult cardiothoracic surgery intensive care.

Includes aortic surgery, CABGs, and valve surgery.

ECMO treatment.

Tier 3 centre in the Victorian ECMO service.

Historically 75% post-cardiotomy patients.

Neurology/neurosurgery cases.

Non-trauma centre.

Clot retrieval programme.

Obstetric ICU services.

Complex high-risk obstetric care centre.

Requirements

Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Appropriate health professional tertiary qualifications.

Working with Children's Certificate.
