About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to join the New Zealand Defence Force as a Combat System Specialist. In this role, you will work as part of a team to operate military radars and sonars to understand what ships, aircraft, and submarines are in the vicinity of a warship. You will also operate remotely controlled weapons systems to defend and defeat the enemy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate military radars and sonars to detect and track surface ships, submarines, and aircraft.
  • Operate remotely controlled weapons systems, including the Phalanx CIWS and Mini-Typhoon heavy machine gun.
  • Direct Maritime Helicopters in tasks such as Search and Rescue or anti-submarine warfare.
  • Work as part of a team to build a picture of the environment surrounding a warship.

Career Progression and Training

As a Combat System Specialist, you will have opportunities for career progression and training. You will complete a Basic Trade Training course, followed by a Job Training course to learn the specialized systems of the Anzac Frigate. You will also have opportunities for ongoing training and development throughout your career.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible to apply for this role, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a minimum of 17 years of age upon entry.
  • Be free of any criminal conviction for the previous two years.
  • Have a minimum of 3 years secondary school education.
  • Be medically fit for service.
  • Meet the minimum entry fitness standards.
