Job Overview

As an Assistant Director within our Policy, Program, or Regulatory functions, you will be required to undertake work that is very complex or sensitive within a changing environment.

You will exercise sound decision-making and judgement to produce high-level advice; engage in complex problem-solving and issues management; and undertake detailed or sensitive work that may impact on strategic, political, or operational outcomes for the department.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead high-performing teams to achieve results in line with departmental objectives.
  • Provide specialist, expert advice on complex areas of policy, program, or regulatory frameworks.
  • Communicate and make decisions that are based on professional judgement, evaluating risks in the context of a complex and changing environment.
  • Manage complex issues with a focus on research and analysis.
  • Apply comprehensive work knowledge, precedent, and established legislation, policy, procedures, and guidelines to situations involving a high level of complexity and sensitivity which require considerable interpretation and analysis.
  • Develop and actively manage key internal and external relationships, including collaborating with key stakeholders and representing and explaining agency views in various forums.
  • Promote and encourage quality decision-making within the department.

  • Well-developed communication skills, including the ability to negotiate outcomes and deliver high-quality written advice on complex and sensitive issues to diverse audiences.
  • The ability to exercise judgement, operate independently, and manage competing priorities in a changing environment.
  • Highly developed research and analysis skills backed by a desire to generate new ideas, approaches, and strategies that align with the department's objectives.
Eligibility and Other Requirements

You must be an Australian citizen.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Baseline, Negative Vetting 1, or Negative Vetting 2 security clearance.

Pre-employment Check: DCCEEW must be satisfied that successful applicants are of suitable character which is assessed through a pre-employment screening process.

This process includes a national police check, referee checks, and a pre-employment medical assessment.

A probationary period of six (6) months will apply to any new engagement to the APS.
