Climate Change Specialist Role

This position is part of the Planning Services department and plays a crucial role in supporting the development, implementation, and review of City strategies, plans, policies, projects, and programmes that aid in climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Main Responsibilities
  • Develop the City's Climate Change Response Plan, encompassing corporate adaptation and community mitigation and adaptation sections.
  • Analyse global and local climate change contexts to ensure the City remains updated on the latest developments and maintains best practices.
  • Implement or coordinate with business units on the implementation of the City's Climate Change Response Plan.
  • Report progress towards targets and actions in the City's Climate Change Response Plan.
  • Represent the City at external working groups as required.
  • Collaborate with internal branches to ensure the City's sustainability objectives related to climate change are met.
  • Prepare reports for consideration by Council.
Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Sustainability, Climate Science, Environmental Science or equivalent.
  • Strong understanding of climate science, policies, and mitigation and adaptation strategies and initiatives.
  • Able to interpret relevant legislation and associated technical documents.
  • Experience with carbon inventories and requirements for carbon neutral certification (Climate Active).
  • Ability to gather, analyse, and report on insights and trends from emissions data.
  • A self-starter, collaborator, team player, and effective communicator (verbal and written).
  • Creative and analytical skills with an ability to conceptualise and bring to fruition projects and strategic initiatives.
  • A high level of organisational ability in planning, prioritising, and achieving outcomes to deadlines.
  • A commitment to providing leadership and services that promote and support sustainability.
  • Experience in coordinating expert technical advice.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, research, and analytical skills.
  • Strong written communication skills, including preparing correspondence and reports for various stakeholders.
