Senior Ecological Scientist Position
This position is an exciting opportunity to lead ecological expertise into project pipelines and build internal capability across land condition assessment, monitoring design, and evidence-based decision making.
The successful candidate will provide critical ecological insights to inform carbon project designs, develop and operationalise land condition frameworks, and build ecological baselines and monitoring protocols.
- Lead ecological evidence for carbon projects by translating vegetation condition, regeneration potential, and disturbance history into project designs that meet Australian regulations.
- Develop and implement land condition frameworks, defining metrics, sampling designs, and thresholds to track change over time.
- Build ecological baselines and monitoring protocols, integrating plot, photo, and historical land use records to ensure methods are audit-ready.
- Fuse field and remote sensing data to quantify biomass, structure, and recruitment, flagging data quality issues.
- Provide clear go/no-go ecological calls for project eligibility areas, management interventions, and expected carbon trajectories.
- Collaborate with the Chief Scientist to test assumptions, stress-test models, publish technical notes, and contribute to method submissions.
- Train staff in vegetation ID, plot methods, photo standards, data logging, and error tracking, implementing QA/QC checks.
- Represent the company's science with regulators, research partners, pastoral clients, and corporate buyers, communicating evidence plainly.
- Capture lessons from field campaigns, updating SOPs, data schemas, and decision rules to tighten uncertainty and improve credit yield confidence.
Ideal candidates will be PhD-qualified in a relevant field such as ecology, environmental science, plant science, or geospatial science, with extensive field experience in Australian rangelands or comparable dryland systems.
Demonstrated ability to design repeatable ecological surveys at landscape scale, comfort reading and critiquing LiDAR/RS outputs, strong data handling skills, and ability to brief executives in plain English.
Preferred qualifications include experience with ACCU/ERF methodology implementation, familiarity with FullCAM, carbon stock modelling, or growth/recruitment modelling, and past involvement in method development, policy submissions, or large research consortia.
BenefitsThis role offers opportunities to work on high-profile sites across Australia, subsidised wellbeing programs, professional development, memberships paid for, and a competitive remuneration package.
What We OfferWe welcome applications from candidates across Australia, offering relocation support for the right candidate.
