Job Opportunity

A strategic and commercially astute Senior Legal Counsel is required to join a financial services organisation on a 12-month contract. The role involves being at the forefront of complex corporate transactions and M&A activity, providing clear and practical advice across a broad spectrum of retail banking matters.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in guiding governance, regulatory and transactional matters, working closely with executives and cross-functional teams to deliver strategic outcomes. This is an ideal role for a Senior Legal Counsel looking to make a meaningful impact in a purpose-driven environment that blends commercial focus with a collaborative culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of legal and governance workstreams for complex M&A and strategic transactions, from structuring and due diligence through to board approvals and integration planning.
  • Provide expert, hands-on advice on corporate governance, directors' duties, and compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Support retail banking operations with clear and practical guidance on a range of legal and regulatory matters.
  • Engage confidently with stakeholders, including Board members and executive staff, and manage relationships with external counsel.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of governance frameworks, policies and member communications.

About You:

  • 8–12+ years' PQE in corporate advisory or M&A, ideally with experience gained in private practice and/or an in-house financial services legal team.
  • Strong technical expertise in corporate law, with the ability to advise on complex transactions and regulatory matters.
  • Commercial and solutions-focused, with a proven ability to work autonomously and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Skilled at building relationships and influencing senior stakeholders.
  • Experience within mutual banking is advantageous but not essential.
