The Biosecurity Operations Division plays a pivotal role in protecting Australia's agricultural industries and trade from biosecurity threats.

To achieve this, the division employs a regulatory approach to implement effective border controls, ensuring compliance with Australia's biosecurity requirements.

Border controls encompass inspection, assessment, community engagement, and contact centre services, as well as husbandry services for animals and plants through post-entry quarantine facilities.

The Pathway Operations - Travellers and Mail team performs regulatory screening and inspections of goods at the border to verify compliance with Australia's biosecurity requirements.

This involves working closely with policy and risk owners within the department to inform operational policy and deliver regulatory functions in accordance with legislative requirements and national standards.

Main Responsibilities:
  1. Screening, Inspection, and Assurance: Conduct a range of screening, inspection, and assurance-related activities associated with international aircraft, air and sea passengers, crew, and international mail.
  2. Documentation Assessment: Assess documentation to confirm compliance with Australia's biosecurity requirements.
  3. Non-Compliant Goods Management: Manage goods that do not comply with import requirements and capture information to support evidence-based decisions.
  4. Advisory Services: Provide timely and accurate advice on biosecurity matters to stakeholders, clients, and senior managers.
  5. Risk Identification: Identify trends in biosecurity risks and escalate these to assist in targeting intelligence and risk-based activities.
  6. Compliance Monitoring: Monitor compliance with appropriate standards of behaviour in line with departmental expectations and the APS Code of Conduct and Values.
  7. Safety and Rehabilitation: Promote and comply with departmental WHS and Rehabilitation policies and guidelines, and be alert for and report risks to local management and WHS.
  8. On-the-Job Coaching: Provide on-the-job coaching and assist and support other employees on biosecurity issues.
