Job Title:

Student Support Mentor

This is a casual opportunity to work in our call centre, providing guidance and support to Deakin University students.

As a mentor, you will be responsible for making outbound calls and sending emails to students, offering study guidance and helping resolve common queries.

  • You will work remotely in a virtual environment, completing individual tasks while collaborating with colleagues to ensure timely completion of required calls.
  • Accurate and timely record-keeping across multiple systems, including case notes and call statistics, is essential.
  • You will navigate internal resources and systems to search for and provide accurate information, confidently referring students to the appropriate support services.
  • Regular updates to the Coordinator, Priority Students, including insights and trends to enhance program operations, are required.
  • Operational and administrative support, and escalating any concerns as needed, is also part of your role.

Contributing to team success by offering support and advice to colleagues, and providing training and mentoring to new mentors when needed, is an important aspect of this role.

We are looking for a current Deakin student with a strong commitment to supporting their peers and helping them feel confident in their university journey.

Effective communication skills, active listening, empathy, and confidence in engaging in conversations that build trust and connection with others are essential.

A diligent, proactive approach to work, showing initiative when needed and following through on tasks with care, is also required.

Selection Considerations

Key Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be a current Deakin University student and have successfully completed at least 2 trimesters/semesters of study (minimum of 4 credit points completed).
  • Must have a minimum of two remaining trimesters/semesters of study after Trimester 2.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting others in formal or informal settings is desirable.
  • Strong interest in peer-to-peer support, with the ability to actively listen, show empathy, problem-solve, and provide accurate guidance and/or referrals.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage clearly and professionally with others. Previous customer service experience is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with Deakin's student support services is highly desirable.
  • Confident computer skills, including data entry, navigating systems, and professional use of email.
  • Own computer and headset, with suitable private and confidential workspace at home, to conduct outbound calls.
  • Occasional requirement for in person activities, such as team or professional development days.
