Job Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and empathetic individual to fill the role of Family & Carer Peer Support Worker – Adult Mental Health. As part of our team, you will work closely with families and carers of individuals with mental illness to provide support and guidance.

Utilizing your lived experience, you will empower carers to regain control of their lives, consider their unique needs, and support the person with mental illness they care for.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the challenges faced by families and carers, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with consumers, carers, and service staff to develop and implement personalized support plans.
  • Providing education and resources to help carers understand and manage mental health conditions.
  • Facilitating group sessions and workshops to promote social connections and community engagement.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with local services and organizations to enhance access to resources and support.
  • Contributing to the development of policies and procedures that reflect best practices in family and carer support.

Required skills and qualifications include:

  • Lived or living experience of caring for or having a family member with a mental illness and treatment within a mental health service.
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to consult, liaise, and work collaboratively with consumers, carers, and service staff.
  • Ability to work independently in an organized manner and be a good team player when required.
  • Commitment to working with families/carers and service providers in the improvement of mental health services for consumers and their family/carers.
  • Understanding of AOD screening and assessment of substance use/withdrawal and principles of integrated mental health and AOD treatment approach.
