Overview
As a Critical Environment Technician (CET) within Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) division, your role will be pivotal in ensuring the operational integrity of our data centers. This encompasses a variety of responsibilities, including liaising with suppliers and vendors, assessing safety conditions, possessing a comprehensive understanding of critical environment machinery, executing maintenance tasks, and managing onsite incidents in collaboration with fellow facilities experts. You will also leverage telemetry and other monitoring systems to oversee equipment functionality and operational efficiency.
The Cloud Operations & Innovation ( CO+I) sector is fundamental to the delivery of our cloud services. As a CO+I Critical Environment Technician, you will contribute significantly to the infrastructure that supports Microsoft's online platforms, including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. Our team is dedicated to fostering the personal and professional growth of all members, offering various training programs, diversity initiatives, and professional certifications.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND at least 1 year of experience in mission-critical services (e.g., high availability environments such as data centers, oil and gas facilities, hospitals, or related sectors) or equivalent experience.
Background Check Requirements:
Candidates must meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening criteria for this position. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: Successful completion of the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Citizenship Verification: Verification of Australian Citizenship is required to comply with federal government security standards.
- NV1/2, PV Clearance Assessment: This role may necessitate an enhanced background check through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency.
While not mandatory, we also value the following Preferred Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND 3+ years of experience in mission-critical services (e.g., high availability environments) OR an Associate's Degree or technical certification with 2+ years of relevant experience.
Responsibilities
- Act as an operations specialist in a primary area of critical environment operations (e.g., electrical, mechanical, controls, generators) and independently manage advanced tasks.
- Regularly inspect and oversee critical environment-related facility equipment (e.g., HVAC systems, mechanical systems) for unsafe or abnormal conditions, escalating issues as per established policies.
- Utilize an internal computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to track equipment assets and manage maintenance work orders.
- Respond swiftly to onsite incidents, leading response teams for abnormal conditions affecting operations, and coordinating with other facilities professionals for corrective actions.
- Develop and enhance emergency operating procedures (EOPs), methods of procedure (MOPs), and standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to critical environment operations.
- Perform various maintenance tasks (e.g., planned, predictive, corrective) with minimal oversight, adhering to established procedures for one or more equipment types.
- Demonstrate a practical understanding of equipment functionality and troubleshooting methods independently within your trained discipline.
- Provide guidance to junior colleagues in system troubleshooting and problem resolution.
- Adhere to safety and security protocols (e.g., job hazard assessments, environmental health and safety guidelines) to ensure work is conducted safely and reliably.
