Job Description

The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Program Coordinator to join the Naalamba Ganbu Nerrlinggu Yilam team, which works to reduce the over-representation of Aboriginal people in the Victorian correctional system.

As a Program Coordinator, you will be responsible for coordinating program activities for the Yawal Mugadjina Cultural Mentoring Program, including liaising with Elders and Respected Persons, prison locations, and other stakeholders.

You will also have the opportunity to develop strong working relationships with prison staff, engage in cultural activities, and contribute to the department's Koori Staff Network.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating the delivery of the Yawal Mugadjina Cultural Mentoring Program across the Victorian Prison system
  • Liaising with Elders and Respected Persons and prison locations to schedule Yawal Mugadjina prison visits each month
  • Leading the coordination of quarterly training activities for Elders and Respected Persons
  • Traveling across multiple prison locations statewide

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal Community, both society and culture
  • Ability to communicate competently and sensitively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal community
  • Capacity to define tasks to be delivered in an effort to meet agreed outcomes while coordinating and guiding others
