The Water Resources Program within the Department of Ecology is seeking to fill a Water Resources Statewide Permitting Coordinator (Environmental Specialist 5) role. This position is flexible in terms of location, allowing for placement in various offices across the state.

Upon hiring, candidates must reside within a reasonable commuting distance from their assigned office.

Compensation Note: If the position is based in the Northwest Region Office, an additional salary adjustment may apply due to regional cost of living.

In this impactful role, you will contribute to the development of policies aimed at the effective management of Washington's water resources. As part of the Operations and Technical Support team, your expertise will be crucial in evaluating regulations and drafting guidelines that facilitate water right permit decisions. As you progress to the Environmental Specialist 5 level, you will become the statewide authority on water right permitting, working collaboratively with various stakeholders, including local and federal agencies, Tribes, and community groups.

This position offers a clear career trajectory and opportunities for professional development within the Environmental Specialist classification, with consideration for applicants at the ES3, ES4, and ES5 levels based on qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the Permit Quality Team in establishing and executing comprehensive water right permitting protocols.
  • Encourage effective communication among permitting staff to strengthen teamwork.
  • Translate team preferences and requirements into clear, actionable directives.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between permitting personnel and program management.
  • Monitor permitting decisions and relay information to staff statewide.

In-Training Opportunity: This position is designed for growth, with the goal of advancing to the Environmental Specialist 5 (ES5) classification.

Required Qualifications:

A total of six (6) years of relevant experience and/or education, including:

  • Experience in environmental analysis, control, or planning.
  • Education: A degree in environmental, physical, or natural sciences, environmental planning, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in water right permitting.
  • Experience in leading and managing teams.
  • Knowledge of water resource management laws and policies.
