About the Position

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join our dynamic team in the Immunology Division. The successful candidate will be a key member of the lab, responsible for facilitating its function, including ordering, database management, project management, and assisting in the planning and execution of research projects.

This role will involve ensuring reagents are titrated and aliquoted, maintaining accurate and detailed laboratory records, and ensuring compliance with all safety and ethical standards in the lab. The Research Assistant will also assist the team in carrying out day-to-day operations and support general research group activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the planning and execution of research projects
  • Ensure reagents are titrated and aliquoted
  • Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and ethical standards in the lab
  • Assist the team in carrying out day-to-day operations
  • Support general research group activities
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline (e.g., Biology, Biochemistry, Immunology)
  • Previous laboratory experience in a research setting, including primary cell work (aseptic technique essential) and general cell biology
  • Proficiency in molecular and cellular biology techniques (e.g., PCR, flow cytometry, tissue culture)
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, and excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent aseptic technique and experience with primary human and rodent tissue culture
  • Database management skills
  • Flow cytometry expertise
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • A passion for research and a commitment to advancing scientific knowledge
Desirable Qualifications

The following qualifications are desirable:

  • Experience with CAR T cell research or immunotherapy
  • Animal Handling skills
  • Knowledge of brain cancer biology and related research methodologies
  • PBMC processing and storage of clinical trial samples

Applicants must have unrestricted working rights. Sponsorship is not available for this position.

Terms of Appointment

This position is a full-time appointment for 2 years. Salary is Research Support Employee Level 5 - 6. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
