Position Overview:
The Lead Coordinator for Animal Ethics and Biosafety will play a pivotal role in providing expert guidance and advice regarding animal ethics and pertinent research policies and regulations to key stakeholders. This includes collaboration with the University’s Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees as well as senior leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver executive-level counsel and collaborate with relevant committees to implement institution-wide policy modifications related to animal ethics, biosafety, and biosecurity.
- Oversee and direct the Animal Ethics and Biosafety Advisors to ensure effective administration of the Animal Ethics Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committees.
- Manage the efficient operation of the Animal Ethics and Institutional Biosafety Committees, including member recruitment and regulatory reporting.
- Ensure governance, compliance, and policy advice in the areas of Animal Ethics, Biosafety, and Biosecurity, while developing accessible documentation for researchers.
- Facilitate policy updates and process modifications in consultation with committee chairs and key stakeholders.
- Administer renewals, variations, and inspections of animal and biosafety/biosecurity licenses and certifications.
- Provide training for researchers on Animal Ethics and Biosafety.
- Report breaches of responsible research conduct to the appropriate committees and assist in follow-up investigations.
Qualifications:
- A postgraduate degree complemented by a minimum of five years of experience in animal research, gene technology, or biomedical research compliance within an academic or medical research context.
- Proficient understanding of the legislation and standards governing research involving animals and biological agents, with the ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Experience in regulatory compliance management, including conducting inspections and audits.
- Demonstrated leadership skills with a proven ability to manage and inspire a cohesive team.
- Experience in developing and implementing policies and procedures in an academic setting.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a talent for managing relationships with key research stakeholders.
- Proven ability to manage projects independently and adapt to changing priorities.
- Capability to design and deliver effective training programs in animal ethics and biosafety.
- Strong collaborative skills, with a focus on sharing knowledge across areas of expertise.
