Community Safety Officer Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Community Safety Officer to join our team. The successful candidate will have a holistic understanding of how crime and perceptions of safety influence community participation and wellbeing.

This role involves working with a range of partners to plan and implement projects designed to improve perceptions of safety and reduce crime, underpinned by a social determinants and community development framework.

About the Role

The Community Safety Officer will design and deliver place-based initiatives to prevent crime and increase perceptions of safety. This will include conducting Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) audits for spaces as required by internal and external stakeholders, providing advice to statutory planners and other relevant council officers, and coordinating community events.

  • CPTED Audits: Conduct CPTED audits for spaces as required by internal and external stakeholders to identify opportunities to improve perceptions of safety.
  • Advice and Support: Provide advice to statutory planners and other relevant council officers on various Council and private project based on CPTED principles.
  • Place-Based Initiatives: Design, deliver and evaluate place-based initiatives to prevent crime and increase perceptions of safety.
  • Community Events: Coordinate the Darebin Neighbourhood Street Parties Program and perform community safety audits for various places as required.

The ideal candidate will have a tertiary qualification in health promotion, criminal justice, community development or sociology, with demonstrated experience in conducting CPTED audits and Community Safety Audits. They will also have a strong understanding of the social determinants relating to crime and community safety, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
