About the Role

Xero is seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Counsel/Patent Attorney to join our team. As a key member of our legal team, you will play a critical role in executing our intellectual property and AI strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support Business and Legal Teams: Collaborate with our business and legal teams to identify and resolve intellectual property aspects of legal matters, including global and region-specific initiatives.
  • Manage Patent Portfolio: Work closely with our Senior Patent Attorney to manage Xero's global patent and design portfolio, including drafting and prosecuting applications.
  • Provide IP Advice: Partner with our Product and Technology teams to provide early IP advice and grow our pipeline of new invention disclosures.
  • Train Xeros on IP Topics: Provide engaging and empowering training to our team members on IP topics.
  • Support IP Queries: Assist our legal team and extended business with day-to-day IP queries.
  • Develop IP Governance Programmes: Work with our GM - Intellectual Property to drive and support the further development and maturation of internal intellectual property, data, and AI governance programmes.
  • Evaluate Legislative and Regulatory Environments: Help evaluate the impact of evolving legislative and regulatory environments for intellectual property, AI, and cyber on our various business units.
  • Champion IP, AI, and Cyber: Collaborate and build relationships with key internal stakeholders to champion intellectual property, AI, and cyber across the business.
  • Contribute to Policy and Process Development: Contribute to internal intellectual property, data protection, and AI policy and process development, including training.
Requirements
  • Registered or Near-Registered Patent Attorney: With 4-6 years of experience.
  • Experience Drafting and Prosecuting Software and AI Focused Patent Applications.
  • Experience or Degree in Computer Science/Programming, Physics, or Related Fields.
  • Law Degree Desirable but Not Critical.
  • Experience or Strong Demonstrated Interest in Global Approaches to Data Governance Frameworks, Including AI Governance.
  • Experience Providing Legal Advice to Companies in the Technology Sector.
