Appellate Attorney Representation for Indigent Clients

The State of Washington's Office of Public Defense (OPD) is seeking qualified attorneys to provide representation to indigent clients on appeal. As an appellate attorney, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal representation to clients who are facing the loss of liberty or family.
Job SummaryThe OPD Appellate Program provides state-funded attorney representation to indigent clients with a right to counsel at State expense before the Washington State Court of Appeals and the Washington State Supreme Court. We are seeking attorneys with experience in appellate law and a commitment to indigent defense.
Responsibilities- Provide representation to indigent clients on appeal, including researching and writing briefs, arguing cases before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, and communicating with clients and their families.
- Meet with clients and their families to discuss their cases and provide guidance on the appeals process.
- Work collaboratively with other attorneys and staff to ensure that clients receive high-quality representation.
- Stay up-to-date on changes in the law and appellate procedure in the State of Washington.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to improve skills and knowledge.
- Be a licensed member of good standing with the Washington State Bar.
- Meet Washington State Supreme Court Standard for Indigent Defense 14.3 Appellate Representation.
- Demonstrate a commitment to indigent defense and a willingness to challenge the State on issues of bias and prejudice.
- Possess experience or interest in how race, gender, national origin, disability, and class intersect to create disparities for individuals experiencing state intervention in their lives.
- Be familiar with appellate procedure in the State of Washington and have experience or interest in writing briefs and arguing cases before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.
- Have substantial experience in the Washington State appellate courts.
- Provide a Washington State Court of Appeals or Washington State Supreme Court brief writing sample.
