Brisbane central business district, Queensland, Australia Robert Walters Full time
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Finance Officer to join a highly respected public sector organisation based in the heart of Brisbane CBD. This role offers you the chance to make a meaningful difference by supporting essential housing and community services that directly benefit Queenslanders. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about contributing to positive social outcomes while developing their finance career. The organisation is dedicated to fostering respectful relationships, gender equality, and a culture where everyone feels safe, valued, and engaged. The role is for a period of 3 months initially, with the possibility of extension.

What you'll do:

As an Assistant Finance Officer, you will play an integral part in supporting the delivery of critical housing services through meticulous financial administration. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve processing various types of transactions related to tenancy agreements, bond loans, and home loans while ensuring all actions are completed accurately and within set timeframes. You will be entrusted with maintaining precise records through diligent document management practices and compiling thorough balance sheet reconciliations. By providing dependable support for management on financial matters, you will contribute directly to the achievement of organisational goals. Your ability to communicate clearly with internal teams and external clients will be key in building strong working relationships. Success in this role requires attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, a commitment to ethical behaviour, and a genuine desire to deliver customer-focused services that make a real difference in the community.

- Provide timely and accurate support to housing service programmes by processing daily tenancy transactions, bond loan activities, home loan refunds, and responding efficiently to email queries requiring action or decision.
- Perform a range of financial activities including preparing journals, managing accruals, conducting reconciliations, monitoring suspense accounts, and correcting variances as they arise.
- Deliver high-quality data entry and financial support for clients using systems such as Reside, Bondscape, and Loanscape; this includes debt reviews, credit transfers, and other necessary financial adjustments.
- Support document management processes by filing and retrieving documents, reports, and records as required to ensure compliance with organisational standards.
- Compile detailed balance sheet reconciliations specific to general ledger accounts to maintain accuracy in financial reporting.
- Assist management by providing reliable support relating to accurate financial transactions aligned with the strategic objectives of the organisation.
- Organise your workload effectively by setting priorities independently while seeking guidance when needed to meet deadlines without direct supervision.
- Utilise well-developed communication and interpersonal skills to achieve positive outcomes for stakeholders and influence decisions constructively.
- Build and sustain positive relationships with both team members and clients by responding accurately and efficiently to queries in a manner that fosters trust.
- Model professional conduct at all times by consistently applying ethical standards in all interactions with colleagues and clients.

What you bring:

To excel as an Assistant Finance Officer in this public sector environment, you will bring proven experience in handling complex financial tasks with precision. Your background should include exposure to transactional finance operations, such as processing payments or reconciling accounts, within organisations where accuracy is paramount. You will have demonstrated your ability to organise workloads effectively without constant supervision while remaining responsive when guidance is needed. Your interpersonal strengths will shine through your collaborative approach with colleagues as well as your considerate responses when assisting clients. A solid understanding of ethical practice is essential; you consistently act with integrity in every situation. Ideally, you are familiar with public sector finance processes or can quickly adapt your knowledge base accordingly. Experience using enterprise resource planning systems like SAP ECC6 will be highly regarded. Above all else, your commitment to supporting others, whether through clear communication or efficient problem-solving, will set you apart as someone who thrives in roles centred on service delivery.

- Demonstrated experience providing effective support for accurate financial transactions within a large or complex organisation.
- Proven ability to manage multiple work priorities independently while seeking direction when appropriate to ensure deadlines are met consistently.
- Well-developed communication skills enabling you to interact positively with stakeholders at all levels and influence outcomes constructively.
- Strong interpersonal abilities that allow you to build rapport quickly with team members and clients while responding efficiently to queries.
- A track record of modelling professional conduct by adhering strictly to ethical standards in all aspects of your work.
- Knowledge of or capacity to rapidly acquire knowledge of procedures related to rental accounts, bond loans, and housing loans within a public sector context.
- Familiarity with financial management systems such as SAP ECC6 or similar platforms used for journal preparation, reconciliations, and account monitoring.
- Understanding of statutory requirements under relevant legislation such as the Financial Accountability Act 2009 or willingness to learn these frameworks quickly.
- Experience supporting document management processes including filing, retrieval of records, and report compilation in accordance with organisational policies.
