The Role

The ABC is looking for aReporter to join our dedicated ABC Gippsland team. You’ll play an important role in creating engaging local and national news content that reflects the people and issues shaping regional Victoria. You’ll work as part of a collaborative and passionate newsroom committed to telling diverse, authentic stories that resonate with audiences across Australia.

You’ll cover Warragul, Traralgon, Inverloch, Bairnsdale and Orbost from our Sale radio studios and newsroom. Our reporters are vital in bringing the characters and stories of these communities to local and national audiences. The ways to tell these stories are ever‑evolving; it could be a live cross into TV with overlay you filmed yourself using the latest mobile technology, an online story on Australia’s most trusted news website, a carefully crafted radio package on AM, a short piece in a radio news bulletin you’re presenting live or a long‑form YouTube video.

The Job

- Create original, high‑quality news content for broadcast and digital platforms, including radio, television, and online.

- Present bulletins, interviews, and packages across all platforms, including breaking news.

- Identify and develop story ideas relevant to local, regional, and national audiences.

- Build and maintain strong community contacts to source authentic and diverse stories.

- Collaborate with colleagues across Regional & Local and ABC News teams to share and distribute content.

- Contribute to planning and commissioning discussions to ensure strong reach and engagement.

- Uphold ABC values, editorial policies, and workplace safety standards.

You’re an experienced and motivated journalist who’s passionate about regional storytelling and understands the issues that matter to local communities.

You’ll have

- Journalism or equivalent skills and experience.

- Proven ability to research, produce, and present accurate and engaging news content.

- Strong editorial judgment, storytelling ability, and understanding of local and national issues.

- Demonstrated ability to represent diverse voices and tell stories that reflect Australia’s cultural and geographic diversity.

- Current and valid Driver’s Licence is essential with a willingness and flexibility to travel to remote locations.
