Clinical Nurse Consultant - Liver & Intestinal Transplant

About the Role:
This is to recruit a part‑time ongoing liver and intestinal transplant clinical nurse consultant role (0.8 EFT, 64 hours per fortnight) within the Department of Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition, Division of Surgery at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH), with the possibility to increase the sessional allocation to fulltime 1.0 FTE (80 hours per fortnight) in 2026. This position supports the paediatric liver transplant program in Victoria and the sole paediatric intestinal transplant program in Australia and New Zealand. Operating at the interface of complex clinical care, national service delivery and program development, the CNC provides expert consultation, coordination and education across all stages of transplant care, from assessment and national listing to long‑term follow‑up and transition to adult services.
The role also represents RCH nationally through collaboration with TSANZ, OTA, DonateLife and other key stakeholders to advance best practice in paediatric transplant nursing.
You will:
- Lead the coordination and delivery of comprehensive care for liver and intestinal transplant patients, including national listings, living donor assessments and post‑operative management.
- Drive continuous quality improvement and service innovation through data benchmarking, research and development of national guidelines.
- Provide leadership and mentorship to nursing, medical and allied health staff across RCH and referring centres.
- Deliver state and national‑level education and contribute to professional forums that shape transplant policy and practice.
- Represent RCH in national and international transplant networks and contribute to publications, presentations and research collaborations.
Your skills and experience:
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) administered through the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
- Postgraduate qualification in paediatric or critical care nursing & Masters degree in relevant discipline (or working towards)
- Extensive experience in paediatric hepatology, transplant, or intensive care nursing.
- Demonstrated leadership in complex care coordination and multidisciplinary collaboration.
- Proven ability to contribute to service development, research, and education at local and national levels.
- Excellent communication, organisation and decision‑making skills, including capacity to manage and participate in after hours on‑call transplant responsibilities.
About the Department:
The Department of Gastroenterology and Clinical Nutrition is a recognised centre of excellence for the management of paediatric liver disease, intestinal failure and gastrointestinal disorders. The service provides comprehensive multidisciplinary care, integrating nursing, medical and allied health expertise.
As part of the Victorian Liver Transplant Unit partnership with Austin Health, RCH delivers specialist transplant services to children across Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and other referring states, the team is committed to advancing clinical practice through research, innovation and collaboration, ensuring the best outcomes for children and families requiring complex transplant care.
