City of Melbourne, Australia Wyndham City Council Full time

Band 4 salary from $78,402.48 per annum plus superannuation and a fortnightly RDO.

Werribee based.

About the role

Wyndham City Council is seeking a skilled and hands‑on Senior Mechanic to join our Fleet Management Unit. In this key operational role you will carry out maintenance and repair tasks across a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment to ensure they meet safety, quality and productivity standards.

Acting as a senior technical lead within the workshop you will also play an important role in mentoring less experienced team members, supporting apprentices and assisting the Team Leader Fleet Maintenance with day‑to‑day workshop operations. This is a great opportunity to bring your trade experience into a collaborative, safety‑focused local government team committed to service excellence.

This is a full‑time permanent position. Working additional hours may be required by exception and provision of assistance with municipal emergencies/call‑outs. This role may be required to work at other sites across Wyndham City to meet operational and business requirements.

What your day will look like

- Carry out programmed and reactive maintenance and repairs on Council’s fleet, including heavy plant, light vehicles and small plant such as mowers and chainsaws, to ensure safe, compliant and reliable operation.

- Act as a technical lead within the workshop by guiding and mentoring apprentices and colleagues, sharing experience to build team capability and confidence.

- Support the Team Leader Fleet Maintenance with day‑to‑day coordination of workshop operations and step into a leadership role when required to keep schedules and standards on track.

- Use diagnostic and electronic servicing tools to identify and resolve mechanical issues efficiently and in line with industry standards.

- Prepare new fleet vehicles for service, including setup, inspection and coordination with internal stakeholders to ensure readiness for operational use.

- Contribute to a clean, safe and organised workshop environment by maintaining tools and equipment, performing light fabrication tasks and upholding OH&S obligations.

- Communicate clearly and constructively with team and leadership to support productivity, safety and continuous improvement.

- Promptly identify and report faults, risks or safety issues to uphold the integrity of the fleet and the wellbeing of the team.

What you will bring

- Qualified in relevant trade and post‑trade Certificate, such as Certificate IV in Automotive Mechanical Overhauling (AUR40820), or Diploma of Automotive Management (AUR50116), and similar, and more than 3 years of proven experience at a senior level.

- Several years’ experience in a fleet or plant mechanical environment, including exposure to coordination or leadership responsibilities.

- Knowledge and experience in safe and competent operation, service and maintenance of heavy plant and equipment and small plant (e.g., mowers, chainsaws).

- A strong understanding of safe work practices in a mechanical environment and a commitment to maintaining a high standard of workshop operation.

- Proven ability to communicate effectively, work as part of a high‑performing team and contribute to a positive and safety‑driven workplace culture.

- A Victorian Driver’s Licence (Heavy Rigid drivers licence is desirable).

- Forklift License (desirable).

- High Risk Work License – Class DG (desirable).

If you progress past the interview stage, you may be required to complete pre‑employment screening, which may include police checks, a medical, qualification verification, and an Australian work rights check.
