About the opportunity
There is currently one (1) permanent position for immediate filling.
We are seeking a suitably skilled and experienced individual to lead our fisheries science team at our Hillary’s office.
As the Director Fisheries Science and Assessment, you’ll utilise your exceptional people leader skills with extensive scientific experience to help shape and direct the work of the Fisheries Science and Assessment branch to deliver world class science and assessment services, enabling informed decision making for the conservation, sustainable development and management of Western Australia’s fisheries and aquatic resources.
Your ability to build partnerships will be evident in leveraging stakeholder relationships with universities, industry and research institutions and you will represent DPIRD as a credible authority on fisheries science, management and sustainability.
The Fisheries Science and Assessment branch has over 100 FTE – you will have demonstrated exceptional skills in leading, inspiring, mentoring and empowering your team to achieve scientific and departmental strategic outcomes.
Responsibilities
- provide scientific and technical policy advice to executives on the development and implementation of the Department’s risk-based ecosystem approaches that will enable third party certification for the management of the State’s aquatic resources
- coordinate the delivery of world-class scientific and assessment programs across the branch to support the implementation of the Department’s Ecosystem–Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) Framework
- develops and implement an annual plan to enable audits and assessments against the standards for all certified fisheries are carried out on schedule
- oversee branch level activities including project proposals, contract negotiations, contract performance and budget control of the multi-branch taskforces
- embody and espouse the 5 DPIRD values: working together, acting with integrity, responding with purpose, embracing curiosity and creativity and aspiring for a better future
Qualifications
To be considered for the role, the Director position requires a Bachelor degree in Science. Post graduate qualifications in science or an approved relevant scientific discipline is desirable. The preferred applicant will undertake pre-employment screening including comprehensive reference checks, a National Police Check (acquired prior to appointment at applicant’s expense) and verification of qualifications.

DPIRD is an Emergency Management Agency and all employees may be required to work or travel during, or outside of, normal business hours to assist with incidents and emergencies.
