The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking a Senior Prison Officer - Recreation to provide a critical role at Marngoneet Correctional Centre.

About the Business Unit

Marngoneet Correctional Centre and Karreenga Annex is a medium security facility that houses a mix of sentenced and remand men and is located 6km north-west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne. The role of the facility is to contain men in custody safely, securely and humanely, focusing on the individual needs of the men with the aim of providing a successful transition back into the community or on their continued journey through the prison system. The facility has a strong focus on achieving positive outcomes and provides a range of engaged services. Our highly skilled workforce provides supervision and case management and are dedicated to enhancing opportunities to strengthen prisoner pathways.

About the Role

The Recreation Officer falls within the Vocational Services Team. The role of the Vocational Services Team is to prepare prisoners for release and to enhance post release employment opportunities, targeted educational opportunities and personal development programs and activities.

More specifically, the Recreation Officer role is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of recreational programs and activities, both passive and active within the location.

The role also includes assisting the Vocational Services Team with other activities including but not limited to planning and facilitating events within the location, i.e.: cultural events and significant/major events.

The Recreation Officer works within a team environment to optimise the opportunities for prisoners to enhance their life skills and personal development through all aspects of the day-to-day routines, services, and programs of the facility.

The Recreational Officer is also responsible for coordinating and supervising recreational activities for male prisoners and liaising with external service providers and stakeholders.

Some of your duties will include:

- Assess recreational needs of general and special needs prisoners and develop, implement and evaluate recreational programs to meet individual and group requirements in conjunction with prison management.

- Coordinate provision of recreational services and programs to the prisoner population through liaison with staff, stakeholders and prisoners.

- Provide oversight of Recreational budget when planning, developing, and coordinating recreation activities and programs.

- Supervise use of and maintain all sporting and hobby equipment.

- Provide instruction, coaching and training to prisoners working within recreation areas.

- Supervise and direct Prisoner Service Workers.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

- Appropriate qualifications and/or experience in the development, management and delivery of recreational and leisure programs/activities.

- Demonstrated behaviours or achievements that reflect the One Justice values and behaviours of: Serve the Community, Work Together, Act with Integrity, Respect Other People and Make it Happen.

- Demonstrated capacity or aptitude to work with men who are difficult to engage in individually and in group settings.

Qualifications/requirements

- Applicants must have successfully completed the Corrections Victoria Prison Officer pre-service training course.

- Preferred Certificate three in Fitness
