This pool will operate for a period of 12 months with vacancies being offered at part or full time on a permanent or fixed term contract basis with the possibility of extension or permanency. Pool applicants do not hold a right of review against appointment decisions made from the pool.

Role and Responsibilities

As Principal Environmental Officer, you’ll play a central role in assessing state-significant development proposals, providing expert scientific advice, and shaping environmental outcomes that matter. This is a unique opportunity to influence policy, guide strategic planning, and represent the department on key scientific and intergovernmental committees. You’ll also mentor and support a team of Environmental Officers, helping them navigate challenging assessments and build their capabilities. You’ll work with senior leadership to tackle urgent and contentious issues, lead improvement initiatives, and ensure assessments are robust, timely, and aligned with legislative frameworks.

Two opportunities are currently available within our Environmental Protection Authority Services (EPAS) directorate — one in Mining and Industrial South, and another in Iron Ore Assessments.

Eligibility and Requirements

- To be eligible for appointment, applicants must have documentary evidence of entitlement to live and work in Australia for the duration of the employment opportunity.
