Overview

Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery, improvement, research and education. Alfred Health is the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, with merged services planned to form Bayside Health on 1 January 2026, subject to final approval. The new health service will transfer employees from five health services to Bayside Health.

Position

Position Title: Specimen Reception Supervisor

Contract: Permanent - Full Time at 80 hrs per fn

Location: Western Health

Salary: Grade 3 Administrator + 10% In-Charge Allowance: $81,893.24 - $90,536.16 + Superannuation

Team: Alfred Pathology Service (APS)

APS is a key provider of integrated diagnostic capabilities as part of the largest public pathology laboratory network in Victoria, with five specialized units: Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, and Human Molecular Pathology. APS conducts all pathology testing for multiple hospitals and collaborates with research and education partners.

Responsibilities

- Lead the day-to-day operations of the Specimen Reception Services across multiple sites, including Reception and Data Entry, Couriers, and sample preparation for testing and send-away specimens.

- Ensure high standards of specimen reception and service delivery through effective leadership, staff development, training, and continuous improvement.

- Provide operational and administrative oversight, monitor performance, review and refine work roles, and address errors or complaints to maintain quality, efficiency and compliance.

About You

Qualifications

- Successful completion of Year 12 or equivalent, with strong written and spoken English skills.

- Tertiary qualification in laboratory procedures or biological sciences is desirable.

Experience and Skills

- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in a pathology laboratory, including proven experience supervising a workgroup or team.

- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

- Proven experience in pathology specimen reception or similar laboratory environment, including supervising staff and managing workflows.

- Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with ability to develop and deliver staff training and competency programs.

- Excellent written and verbal communication, with ability to engage stakeholders and provide clear instructions.

- Knowledge of specimen handling, biological safety, infection control, OH&S, and pathology procedures.

- High accuracy and attention to detail in data entry and use of laboratory information systems.

- Strong organisational, time management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise competing tasks.

- Previous experience with the iPM and Cerner PathNet Millennium system is desirable.
