About the Central Coast Integrated Pain Service (CCIPS)

The Central Coast Integrated Pain Service (CCIPS) is a non-interventional service based at Gosford Hospital. You will be one of two medical staff working within a multidisciplinary pain team including a psychologist, occupational therapist, physiotherapist and nurse. The service is a purely out-facing service, though in time we aspire to grow to include in-facing chronic pain management. Although based at Gosford Hospital, CCIPS caters for chronic pain patients from the whole Local Health District and therefore covers a geographic area from Hawkesbury to Lake Macquarie. Within this geography we have a significant burden of chronic pain fueled by areas of socioeconomic deprivation, high polypharmacy and opioid consumption, making for a challenging workload. At Gosford Hospital we have both the Cancer Care Centre and a dynamic palliative care department. We also have hybrid facilities within the theatre complex. Although CCIPS is currently out-facing, we recognise the contribution of chronic pain medicine to palliative interventions and have arranged for these to happen where needed. This is a further area for future expansion of CCIPS, with the correct skill mix in the team. CCIPS sits under the Department of Anaesthetics, an accredited training site for ANZCA. We are keen to encourage anaesthesia trainees’ interest in chronic pain and can arrange for trainees to spend time with CCIPS if wanted. We have a scholarship programme running through CCIPS for local GPs to improve their ability to manage these patients in the community. We also have a campus of the University of Newcastle within the grounds of the hospital, offering the opportunity to be involved with undergraduate teaching. Applicants who are dual qualified FANZCA and FFPM (or equivalents) who may be seeking a mixed practice of anaesthetic and chronic pain management should contact Dr Page to discuss further.

Responsibilities and role context

CCIPS is a non-interventional, out-facing service that may evolve to include in-facing chronic pain management. The role involves working within a multidisciplinary team to manage chronic pain patients across a broad geographic area within the LHD, including areas with socioeconomic deprivation. There is collaboration with cancer care and palliative services, and opportunities to contribute to teaching and quality improvement initiatives.
