Associate Director - Structures - ( 186569 )

About Us

At HDR, we specialise in engineering, architecture, environmental and construction services. While we are most well-known for adding beauty and structure to communities through high-performance buildings and smart infrastructure, we provide much more than that. We create an unshakable foundation for progress because our multidisciplinary teams also include scientists, economists, builders, analysts and artists.

HDR supports an inclusive and diverse work environment and is an equal opportunity employer. We encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and people of culturally diverse backgrounds to apply.

We believe that the way we work can add meaning and value to the world. That ideas inspire positive change. That colouring outside the lines can illuminate fresh perspectives. And that small details yield important realisations. Above all, we believe that collaboration is the best way forward.

The Role

HDR is seeking a highly experienced Structural Engineer at Associate Director level to join our Victorian transport structures team in Melbourne. This role will see you providing technical leadership within the Australian transport structures team and contributing more broadly HDR’s global Bridges and Structures Business Class.

Reporting to the Transport Structures Lead – Victoria, you will be the technical lead for the structural design of bridges and transport structures, driving delivery across multiple major projects while supporting HDR’s growth in Victoria. A key responsibility will be to serve as a Proof Engineer for projects in Victoria, requiring pre-qualification from the Victoria Department of Transport and Planning.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead, deliver and provide specialist advice on design activities associated with transport structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, gantries and tunnels
- Provide hands-on technical leadership and direction, developing design criteria, calculations, plans, and specifications
- Serve as a Proof Engineer in Victoria and lead teams executing proof engineering services
- Manage the development of structural asset management deliverables including reports, drawings, models, and specifications
- Collaborate closely with local, national, and global teams to leverage expertise and deliver integrated solutions.
- Drive innovation within the Australian transport structures team.
- Mentor and coach junior engineers and team members, fostering a supportive and high-performance culture
- Represent HDR in the market, contributing to business growth and establishing our technical leadership in the region
- Actively lead HDR’s commitment to Safety and Quality with a focus on our Drive to Zero initiative

Qualifications & Experience

- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related discipline
- Chartered membership of Engineers Australia (Structures) and listing on the National Engineering Register
- Registered Professional Engineer Victoria (RPEV)
- Ability and commitment to obtain Proof Engineer pre-qualification from the Victoria Department of Transport and Planning (current or previous prequalification preferred)
- 20+ years of structural engineering experience focused on bridges and transport structures, with strong consulting and project delivery background primarily in Melbourne and Victoria
- Proven ability to lead design teams and manage complex projects
- Deep knowledge of Australian and Victorian bridge design standards and technical requirements
- Proficiency in structural and asset management software tools such as Midas Civil, SpaceGass, Strand 7, SBD, and Microsoft Office suite
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, able to work effectively in multidisciplinary and diverse teams
- Highly motivated, self-directed, and a strong team player with excellent coordination skills

Why Join HDR?

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a growing and dynamic structures team within a global, 100% employee-owned company. If you are a seasoned structural engineer who values technical excellence, leadership, and collaboration on major infrastructure projects, HDR is the place to advance your career.
