Overview
We are seeking a qualified Vehicle Body Builder to manufacture, modify and repair buses and other vehicles, as required. The role involves constructing frameworks, shaping and attaching panels, and modifying vehicles to special requirements using metal, wood, fibreglass and other materials.
Duties
- Construct and assemble vehicle bodies for buses and coaches using steel, aluminium, and composite materials according to technical drawings and specifications.
- Fabricate and fit structural body panels, frames, and reinforcements, ensuring alignment, strength, and compliance with Australian Design Rules (ADR).
- Perform custom modifications and fabrication work, including accessibility installations, storage solutions, and specialised body components.
- Carry out panel repairs and replacements on damaged or corroded sections using MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene welding techniques.
- Execute high-quality metal fabrication and welding, operating guillotines, presses, rollers, and other metalworking tools.
- Install internal and external fittings, including seating systems, flooring, trims, mirrors, lights, and electrical component housings.
- Prepare and finish body surfaces through grinding, sanding, sealing, and applying rust protection before painting.
- Conduct quality control inspections to verify that completed work meets structural integrity, safety, and compliance standards.
Responsibilities
- Deliver high-quality work in fabrication, fitting, and repairs following company and industry standards.
- Read and use technical drawings and specifications accurately.
- Plan and manage time, materials, and tasks to finish jobs on schedule and within budget.
- Safely operate and maintain specialist equipment (welding machines, presses, bending tools, grinders, CNC machines, jigs).
- Work with mechanics, electricians, and painters to complete projects smoothly.
- Talk with supervisors and clients about job progress, requirements, and technical issues.
- Keep clear records of all fabrication, modification, and inspection work.
- Follow Australian Design Rules (ADR) and workplace safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and well-organised work area.
Qualification & Experience
- AQF Certificate III or higher in Automotive Body Repair Technology, Vehicle Body Building, Fabrication Trade, or equivalent qualification. At least three (3) years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above.
- At least one (1) year of relevant work experience in vehicle body building, metal fabrication, or a related trade field is required.
- Advanced proficiency in MIG, TIG, and oxy-acetylene welding techniques.
- Skilled in structural metal fabrication, cutting, forming, and shaping of components.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and fabrication plans.
- Strong problem-solving ability and technical decision-making in repair and modification work. Commitment to quality assurance and adherence to workshop safety standards.
- Visual accuracy for detailed inspection and measurement tasks.
