Neonatology cares for the sickest newborn babies – infants who are born preterm or require specialist treatment in their first months of life. Successful applicants will have the skills to manage inpatients, outpatients, and emergency patients under the supervision of Neonatology Specialists. We have Neonatal Units across two sites: the Perinatal Centre – King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH) and the surgical centre – Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH). Additionally, we have the Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS WA) located at Perth Children’s Hospital.

Relocation Benefits

International and interstate applicants with suitable qualifications who wish to relocate are encouraged to apply. Sponsorship opportunities with a pathway to permanent residency or a permanent appointment for eligible applicants are currently available. We offer generous initiatives to support your move to Western Australia.

Our FAQ page, including eligibility requirements, is available here.

About Neonatology

The Neonatology Department is composed of several specialised units:

- KEMH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, situated in Subiaco, stands as the largest tertiary/quaternary perinatal NICU in Australia. Approximately 2,200 babies who are born preterm or require respiratory support are admitted to the KEMH NICU each year. This unit provides valuable experience in delivery‑room resuscitation, ventilator management for acute respiratory conditions, continuous monitoring, and nutritional support for extremely preterm or critically ill newborns.

- PCH Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, located within the Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre site in Nedlands, serves as the sole tertiary surgical NICU in Western Australia. This unit offers an excellent chance to engage with the diagnosis and management of a diverse range of neonatal surgical conditions and congenital anomalies.

- Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS WA), situated at PCH, is intricately involved in the retrieval and transport of ill newborns from both metropolitan and regional areas of Western Australia. The service covers the largest geographical area in the world for a single neonatal retrieval service and can retrieve by road, helicopter, and fixed‑wing aircraft.

The CAHS Neonatology Department offers an enriching experience that contributes to the well‑being of newborns and young children, while also providing valuable learning and growth for medical professionals.
