- The annual base salary when in Australia starts from $102,280 per annum.
- Base salary + additional allowances when in Antarctica starts from $172,917 per annum.
- A generous employer superannuation contribution of up to 15.4% will be paid in addition to salary and allowances.
- You will accrue recreation leave at the equivalent of 20 days per annum pro rata. Please note that recreation leave is not available in Antarctica but will be paid out on return to Australia.

The Environmental Remediation Specialist with the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) will work as part of a multidisciplinary team environmental scientists and engineers in support of two Australian Antarctic Science projects: Reducing Environmental Impacts at Contaminated Sites in Antarctic (AAS #4503) and A Cleaner Antarctica (AAS #4622) within the Environmental Stewardship Program (Science Branch). These projects undertake on-site assessment, remediation and monitoring of human impacts in Antarctica (primarily contamination) while also leading the Australian Antarctic Science Program’s scientific effort in contaminated site investigations, contaminant risk assessments and remediation research.

The Remediation Specialist will be required to participate in field programs at Australia’s Antarctic and/or sub-Antarctic stations for up to 5 months at a time. The nature of Antarctic operations means that the timing and duration of deployment can be changeable. Flexibility in circumstance will be necessary for applicants successful in the role.

Qualifications/licences

Provide copy with application:

- Driver’s Licence – A current, unrestricted “C” class (manual) Australian driver’s licence.
- Citizenship – In accordance with the PS Act 1999, APS employees are required to be Australian citizens. Persons who are not Australian citizens will generally only be considered where there are no suitable Australian applicants, with next considerations being Australian residents with work rights and New Zealand citizens.

Obtain prior to commencement:

- Valid Passport – The expiry date of the passport (and any relevant visa) must be at least 6 months beyond the planned end date of your intended stay in the Antarctic or sub-Antarctic
- Provide First Aid (HLTAID0011) must be valid for at least 18 months beyond the date of commencement
- Provide Basic Emergency Life Support (HLTAID010) must be valid for at least 18 months beyond the date of commencement.
- Provide CPR (HLTAID009) must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of commencement

Knowledge and experience

- Relevant experience working on treatment of water and contaminant removal in particular related to petroleum contaminated site remediation or contaminated sites assessment projects.

Highly Desirable

Knowledge and experience:

- Relevant experience working on contaminated sites projects, remediation projects or restoration projects including terrestrial or marine environments.
- Relevant experience working on treatment of contaminated water and soils or contaminant removal from the environment.
- Relevant experience working on contaminated site assessments / investigation projects.
- Relevant experience within the last 5 years working in an operational or field role with applied science teams or field programs.
- Training and experience in operating heavy vehicles, loaders, telehandlers.
- Training and experience or exposure to marine science research or experience working as coxswains.
- Cold region, Antarctic or remote area experience is an advantage.
