The Australian Government established the Office of Road Safety on 1 July 2019 to provide national leadership and co-ordination to improve road safety outcomes. The Government recognises that solutions will require action by all members of the Australian community, including governments, individuals, the non-government sector, industry and research bodies, as we move towards the elimination of road trauma in Australia.

The Branch is responsible for implementing the Australian Government’s responsibilities outlined in the National Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan, designing and delivering non-infrastructure road safety grants and procurements, road safety policy and analytics, and engagement with a broad range of government and non-government stakeholders, including through inter-departmental committees and intergovernmental forums.

We work closely with our Vehicle Safety colleagues within the Division, and the Infrastructure Investment and Surface Transport Emissions Policy divisions to provide a comprehensive focus on road safety.

We have multiple EL1 positions available at a critical point in the evolution of the Office of Road Safety, with a growing focus on building deep ongoing relationships with state, territory and local governments, as well as key industry and research stakeholders and partner agencies across the Australian Government.

With the approval of the National Road Safety Action Plan in February 2023 and the recent Budget funding announcements, these positions will have a key role in working to implement the successful delivery of the Action Plan across the jurisdictions, as well as developing and implementing new non-infrastructure grants, research and data programs and assisting to co-ordinate the activities that will support achievement of the Australian Government’s actions.
