**About the Consumer Safeguards Branch**
The Communications Services and Consumer Division focuses on policy, regulation and programs to supplement the provision of telecommunications infrastructure and services in order to positively impact Australian consumers and business.
The Consumer Safeguards Branch within the Division oversees measures that help achieve these objectives, with a strong focus on the provision of telecommunications consumer protections, as well as the delivery of public interest communications services.
In particular, the Branch has responsibility for supporting Australia's internet governance work which contributes to an open, free, safe and secure internet used by so many Australians.
The Branch is also responsible for the delivery of the Emergency Call Service contract, as well as delivery of the National Relay Service, an Australia-wide phone service for people who are deaf or have a hearing or speech impairment. The Branch further leads on telecommunications consumer safeguards, audio description policy as well as a variety of public interest telecommunications activities spread across the community.
**About the Internet Governance Team**
The Internet Governance Team is the Australian Government’s lead on internet governance. Internet governance refers to the rules, policies, standards and practices that coordinate and shape global cyberspace. In line with Australia’s objectives in this space, we promote an open, free, safe and secure internet.
We go about this by advocating for a multi-stakeholder approach to Internet governance, opposing efforts to bring the management of the Internet under government control, and pursuing policy settings that support Australia’s interests.
The team’s work is well suited to applicants seeking exposure to international work with a technology focus.
We lead Australian Government engagement and advocate for Australian interests in international internet governance forums, including the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and global and regional Internet Governance Forums (IGFs). We also manage the Government’s relationship with the.au Domain Administration (auDA).
**About the Position**:
An opportunity exists for an Executive Level 1 - Assistant Director in the Internet Governance Team for a period of 12 months to back fill a staff member on maternity leave. This 12 month period is intended to include 1-2 months of handover with the existing EL1 in the role.
The team is seeking a substantive EL1 or a high performing APS 6 with experience in:
- Multi-stakeholder/multilateral/international work; or-
- Cyber/information technology/communications industry policy issues.We will also consider proactive EL 1/APS 6 staff with great strategic thinking and communications skills. International travel is expected to be required as well as working some non-standard hours for international phone and video calls.
