**About the Group**
The purpose of the Research and Education Group is to define, lead, produce, share and
support cutting edge research and learning by, with, and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples. The Group supports an annual flagship AIATSIS summit and connects
AIATSIS with universities and the wider research sector to coordinate and influence research
agendas.

**About the Program Area**
The AIATSIS Centre for Australian Languages (ACAL) sits within the Research and Education
Group and undertakes community-based research and projects with the aim of supporting the
active practice and strengthening of Indigenous languages. This includes projects to support
language reawakening through access to archival materials, the documentation of languages
supporting the production of materials such as dictionaries and assisting communities in
achieving these goals. Our work is strongly community focused and supports Indigenous
control of their languages and associated data. We take a national approach to understanding
the situation and status of Indigenous languages and drawing on this we provide advice to
governments on all aspects of language policy, projects and support.

**Role Summary**
The Assistant Director will oversee the development and management of projects to support the
strengthening of Indigenous Australian languages. They will manage a small team that will initiate
and develop projects, engage with communities and stakeholders, produce and maintain useful
resources, hold forums and events, and develop innovative communication and publication outputs
and reporting on outcomes.

**Key Responsibilities**
The Assistant Director will contribute to the achievement of AIATSIS goals and objectives as a
key member of the Research and Education leadership team.
