**The Opportunity**:
The role of Research Projects staff in CSIRO is to collaborate in scientific and technological activities with other research staff usually by assisting with detailed planning, undertaking or assisting with experimental, observational or technology development work, and in carrying out the more practical aspects of the work.

As part of the **Australian National Algae Culture Collection** (ANACC) team, this role will have a major focus (>60%) on the management of the Australian National Algae Supply Service (ANASS).

This role has a few different key areas, this includes:

- A customer-facing side:

- communication with customers to select algal strains fit for purpose,
- preparation and dispatch of cultures to internal CSIRO research staff and external customers to agreed timelines,
- processing orders through the financial management system, and financial reporting.
- Contribution to the operation and quality control of living algal cultures in ANACC, including:

- the preparation of sterile media and cultureware,
- aseptic handling and testing of cultured strains,
- documentation of culture health and phenotypic traits,
- cell enumeration and other research activities.
- Co-management of assigned tasks within the main laboratory of the ancillary glassware washing facility.

**Your duties will include**:

- Liaising with clients, particularly those of ANASS, to determine their needs and take personal responsibility for their satisfaction.
- Accepting responsibility for scheduling and completion of major tasks of ANASS, including evaluation of options, data collection and analysis, user and customer research and user experience.
- Making significant contributions to the interpretation and communication of research or technological results
- May collaborate on drafting presentations to, and/or detailed written reports for clients and the scientific community.
- Under general direction, contributing to managing algal culture systems and the development of original and adapted experimental methods and equipment.
- Showing initiative to seek new approaches to meet experimental or technological needs when encountering new problems where methods are not defined.
- Participating in the identification and definition of research and/or technological problems with colleagues.
- Addressing problems promptly and in a constructive manner.
- Shared responsibility for acquiring and maintaining laboratory and fieldwork consumables and equipment and for scheduling and instructing staff in the use of shared equipment

**Salary**:AU$89,680 - AU$101,459 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

**To be considered you will need**:
**Essential**:

- A relevant bachelor’s degree **and **equivalent relevant work experience in phycology.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the biology and taxonomic understanding of prokaryotic and eukaryotic microalgae.
- Demonstrated proficiency in aseptic microbiological techniques, including the preparation of diverse algal culture media, the isolation and on-going maintenance of microalgae cultures, quality control techniques for growth assessment, viability and axenic verification.
- Demonstrated experience in oral and written customer or stakeholder engagement.

**Desirable**:

- Familiarity in managing or working in an algal culture collection and specifically with a culture supply service.
- Familiarity with operating financial management software such as MYOB.
- Experience with data entry into relational databases
- Experience operating in a multiuser Biosecurity Containment Approved Arrangement and/or Physical Containment laboratory. Experience with microscopy and high-quality imaging of microscopic organisms.For full details about this role please review the Position Description.
