**Fixed-term, full-time position for 12 months.**

**We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team in the field of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences.**

This position is suitable for anyone with a PhD or an equivalent degree in either materials science/engineering, physical chemistry, chemical physics, photonics or another related discipline.

The School of PCES is part of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (SET), which is one of three faculties at the University of Adelaide. SET comprises 12 schools, 21 centres and 5 institutes and is responsible for the needs of over 8,500 students and has an annual budget of $300 million. The Faculty of SET is responsible for teaching a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in disciplines across Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Architecture, Biology, Physics, Agriculture, Food and Wine and Animal Science. It aims to create an innovative agile working environment which is recognised for leadership in teaching, research, and global engagement.

The Institute of Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS) has the vision to pursue a transdisciplinary approach that brings together experimental physicists, chemists, material scientists, engineers, mathematicians, biologists and medical researchers to create new sensing and measurement technologies in order to solve major challenges.

**To be successful you will need**:

- PhD or equivalent degree (or thesis submitted) in materials science/engineering, physical chemistry, chemical physics, photonics or a related discipline.
- A commitment to research excellence in the development and characterisation of photonic materials.
- Demonstrated publication track record in leading scientific journals and conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research in addition to working effectively as a member of a research team.
- Ability to engage with defence and industry partners and manage deliverables

***Desirable**
- Experience in optical spectroscopy in one (or more) of the following areas,
- rare earth ion absorption and fluorescence in crystals, glasses and/or optical fibres
- defect centres absorption and fluorescence in crystals, glasses and/or optical fibres
- Experience in the fabrication and/or handling of optical fibres
- Experience in Raman, FTIR, microscopy and other techniques to determine atom/molecular/microscopic structure of materials.
- Experience in the management and/or maintenance of research laboratories
