**Research Officer**

**(HEO5) and $77,409 and $86,072 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation applies**

**12 months fixed-term, full-time contract**

The School of Physical Sciences in the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering & Technology brings together the internationally acclaimed and contemporary disciplines of chemistry; earth science; and physics, delivering undergraduate and postgraduate education, training and research with both national relevance and global outreach and networks in the public and private sectors.

Working under general direction, the Research Officer supports the enhancement of processes for the remediation of a persistent pollutant. Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are present at dangerous levels in many water sites around Australia and Globally. In collaboration with Enviropacific Services, the Research Officer will conduct research on a system to both capture PFAS and convert it to benign chemical products. Important outcomes are related to reducing the overall cost of the system by improving recyclability and regeneration of components. The Research Officer will work closely with an industry partner to provide experience in industrial and applied chemistry.

**To be successful you will need**:

- Proven proficiency in a range of chemical laboratory techniques including the handling and manipulation of toxic chemicals along with proficiency in various analytical characterisation techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a research unit or comparable environment.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain a highly detailed lab book and data storage system.
- Proven experience in developing and following processes & procedures with highly developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer literacy including skills in data management, analysis and presentation.
- Demonstrated ability to promote the organisational values of integrity, respect, collegiality, excellence and discovery, and a commitment to positively comply with the associated behaviour expectations.

**Qualification/s**
- A degree in a relevant field (Chemistry or Materials Science or Chemical Engineering) with subsequent relevant experience; or
- An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education /training.
