**A little bit about us**
The Road and Vehicle Safety Division aims to improve road safety and reduce road trauma. The division has three main functions; setting the policy direction for road safety through the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-30, the development and maintenance of legislation including the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA) and other legislative instruments and vehicle standards, and regulation of the first provision of vehicles in the Australian market including vehicle certification, imports, enforcement and vehicle recalls.

The Vehicle Safety Policy & Partnerships Branch within the Road Vehicle Safety Division is responsible for supporting the new regulatory framework introduced by the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018 (RVSA) and its subsidiary legislation.

The RVSA commenced on 1 July 2021, and ensures that vehicles provided to the Australian market will meet the safety, theft and environmental impact required by the Australian Design Rules. The department’s online IT system ROVER (Road Vehicle Regulator) integrates all activities and approval under the RVSA legislation.

The responsibilities of the branch include:

- Supporting the transition of industry and department operations to the new regulatory framework;
- Ensuring the alignment of the department’s procedures, guidelines, and systems with the intent of the RVSA;
- Leading the engagement with industry, jurisdictions and stakeholders to ensure vehicles in Australia meet standards on safety, theft and environmental impact; and
- Ensuring the Australian Design Standards are updated to cover advances in technology and consumer expectations.

We work in collaboration with the Vehicle Safety Operations Branch who are Australia’s national vehicle standards regulator. They work to enhance vehicle safety, emissions control, and anti-theft protection to ensure the Australian vehicle fleet is safe and efficient.
