- _**The Opportunity**

The aim of our Ear Health team here at the Telethon Kids Institute is to understand the causes of childhood hearing loss, including otitis media (middle ear infections). We work to identify how big the problem is and look at ways to reduce the impact of the disease.

An integral link for our team is the Aboriginal Community Advisory Group which guides the team in working in a culturally sensitive manner and provides direction to ensure the program is relevant and appropriate for their communities. We now have an opportunity for an Aboriginal Research Assistant to join the team and help us do this important work.

You will work in collaboration with the Djaalinj Waakinj (Listening, Talking) team and the Aboriginal Community Advisory Group to undertake research within the Djaalinj Waakinj Centre for Ear and Hearing Health. Your focus will be on liaising with community groups and organisations to talk about our research and engage with families in our study. This will include enrolling participants into our study, conducting general ear health assessments as well as data entry.

You will also play an important role in providing a cultural lens to the project team and provide input on our ways of working and methods to ensure we work in a culturally secure manner.

Some of your responsibilities will include:

- Assist with the organisation of clinics, community forums and events.
- Recruit and enrol children into the study and conduct ear health assessments.
- Build and retain a professional rapport with participants and their families.
- Assist the team to determine best ways to increase referrals into the study.

The key to your success in this role will be your experience in the following:

- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioner Cert 4 or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated experience in Aboriginal community engagement in the Perth Metropolitan area and building relationships with families to ensure family involvement in research.
- Some understanding and experience in undertaking research projects and/or project coordination.
- Well-developed organisational skills and attention to detail, including a demonstrated ability to set goals manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Well-developed verbal and written communication skills.
- Sound computer and word processing skills.
