**The Role**
The duties of a Ministerial Liaison Officer include the following:

- Contribute to the development and preparation of ministerial, parliamentary, media, Freedom of Information, reporting and committee documentation.
- Coordinate ministerial and parliamentary tasks, including following up on tasks to ensure timeframes and deadlines are met.
- Understand and develop a strategic awareness of the impact and implications of ministerial and parliamentary business to the work area and more broadly Defence and whole-of-government.
- Build and sustain relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve ministerial and parliamentary outcomes.
- Engage with stakeholders, using well developed verbal and written communication skills to support ministerial and parliamentary outcomes.
- Take the initiative to identify and solve problems using professional knowledge and experience, including identifying and developing ideas, analysing alternative courses of action and their implications.
- Employ sound judgment and organisational skills to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.

**About our Team**
The Group’s Parliamentary Business team plays a pivotal role in providing timely and quality information to the Defence Ministers and their staff. The APS 5 Ministerial Liaison Officer will work in the Ministerial, Parliamentary and Cabinet Directorate in the Joint Capabilities Group Headquarters. The Directorate works closely with the Chief of Joint Capabilities to ensure the Group delivers timely and quality information to the Defence Ministers and their staff. The position is a critical APS contributor to the achievement of strategic Defence outcomes, and is a role in which public servants should undertake as it can heighten their personal profile and provide significant experience that will assist them to progress their career.

The Ministerial Liaison Officer will be accountable, under limited direction, to undertake complex ministerial and parliamentary activities and tasks. They will work within a framework of legislation, established principles, work practices and procedures in accordance with Defence's mission and business objectives. The Ministerial Liaison Officer will undertake various ministerial and parliamentary activities involving differing, unrelated, and established processes and methodologies, and will have some authority and discretion to exercise initiative and judgement to achieve results.

The Ministerial Liaison Officer will work in a high pressure environment and to extremely short timeframes. They will need to manage competing priorities to ensure deliverables are met. The Ministerial Liaison Officer will coordinate and contribute to the work of a team, consistent to a work plan, and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members. The Ministerial Liaison Officer will be required to engage with relevant stakeholders to identify expectations and concerns and develop a clear understanding of the issues and solutions to achieve outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute toward ongoing self-improvement and professional development.

Within the Stakeholder Management function, a Ministerial Liaison Officer is accountable under limited direction to perform and achieve complex ministerial and parliamentary work within an integrated workforce. They are accountable to have and maintain a well-developed understanding of and compliance relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defences mission and policy requirements. The Ministerial Liaison Officer will be accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility. They will interpret and provide advice within the stakeholder management function based on legislation, policy and procedures.

They will undertake specialist, technical research and analysis, conduct reviews, assessment, investigations and perform procedural, clerical, administrative support work to achieve results. The Ministerial Liaison Officer will coordinate and contribute to the work of a team consistent to a work plan and provide advice and assistance on methods of task completion to team members. They may be a team coach or supervise a team and be accountable to set work priorities, allocate work, and manage workflows and performance.

They are expected to be capable of reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others and identifying opportunities for on-the-job training within a work unit. The Ministerial Liaison Officer will be required to engage and communicate with stakeholders to identify, respond and provide advice on issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
